At Precision AQ, we know that navigating patient access challenges requires more than data—it takes real-world expertise. That’s why we’ve launched our Meet Our Access Experience Team series, introducing the industry insiders who help life science companies anticipate payer challenges, optimize access strategies, and accelerate time to therapy.

Meet Madeline Waldron, PharmD, BCOP, Vice President, Clinical Oncology Solutions. A board-certified oncology pharmacist, Madeline brings over a decade of experience in oncology clinical practice, research, and administrative leadership. Let’s hear from Madeline.

Q: Can you share a bit about your background and areas of specialty?
I am a board-certified oncology pharmacist, and I spent the first decade of my career in oncology clinical practice at a large academic medical center. After completing oncology-focused residency training, I held roles that spanned both patient-care and administrative and included responsibilities for leading various oncology formulary (Pharmacy & Therapeutics), chemotherapy quality & safety, and clinical pathway committees. While I am passionate about improving all tumor types, I have a special place in my heart for malignant hematology – leukemias and lymphomas – and the bulk of my clinical practice and research is in this field. From my experience, I also have a special interest in EHR optimization and integration and enjoy opportunities to engage with clients on how EHR automation can support quality improvement and access within oncology.

Q: Where did you work prior to Precision AQ?
Prior to joining Precision in January 2024, I held several roles at Cleveland Clinic over a 10 year period. I held direct patient care roles in both the inpatient and ambulatory setting, supporting the delivery of cancer care to thousands of patients through treatment recommendations, error and interaction detection, transition of care support, patient and caregiver education, pathway development and standardization and more. I worked on clinical trial and research development, including early phase, investigator initiated, and retrospective studies. At an administrative level, I had oversight for the Pharmacy & Therapeutics (P&T) committee that made formulary decision for all treatment and supplemental therapies in oncology for the enterprise including post-approval pathway positioning and EHR integration. I was also the director of the pharmacy residency program and have a passion for education and advancing the role of pharmacy within the healthcare team.  Through these and other roles, I developed an understanding of provider and patient market access dynamics that I use to support clients in achieving success for their therapies.

Q: What unique perspectives do you bring to ensuring patient access?
In 2014, I lost my younger brother at the age of 20 after a short but valiant battle with Hodgkin Lymphoma. The experience has shaped every decision I have made since – from choosing to work alongside his physicians on the floors where he was treated, to my passion for malignant hematology and philanthropic work with Leukemia & Lymphoma society and finally to finding my “home” on the OncoGenius team here at Precision where our main goal is to improve access to better treatments for patients with cancer.  I saw firsthand how the speed of innovation and access barriers can impact outcomes and sadly, survival. While the work we do cannot bring back my loved one, it can help future patients and their families achieve positive outcomes.

Q: How has earning your board certification in oncology helped your clients more effectively overcome access obstacles in oncology?
Oncology is a behemoth field and to truly understand its intricacies, you need a strong foundational understanding of the history, science, and clinical application within various malignancies. While this can certainly be achieved without the BCOP title, board certification assures we have not only earned but maintained a high level of subject matter expertise.  When I speak to a client about treatment paradigms in non-small cell lung cancer, I did not just do a cursory review of their website – I truly understand the screening, diagnosis, and treatment intricacies, the challenges and gaps with current therapies, and the opportunities to improve care.  The BCOP credential in combination with my clinical experience allows me to put myself back in the role of an access decision maker and help clients anticipate & overcome access barriers and communicate in a way that adds value to the patient and provider experience.

Q: What healthcare trends aren’t getting enough attention?
While cost and quality do and should get the biggest spotlight, there is a huge generational shift in the way patients and providers interact and get answers.  Driven by many factors including increasing use of AI and technology, shifting priorities and boundaries of millennials and gen Z and unfortunately, some distrust of the healthcare system following the pandemic – many patients and providers are looking to nontraditional sources for information, such as social media or ChatGPT/AI-based sources. As advocates and extenders whose success depends on data accuracy and context, we must also evolve to make sure the resources we provide are useful and meet the needs of the end user so they can make the best decision possible.

Q: What trends will reshape healthcare in the next 1-3 years?
With the current tumultuous political climate, we could take this question in many directions, but regardless of the administration, one trend that is not going away is AI. Every facet of the healthcare system will be reshaped by AI. While this certainly will present innumerable challenges, I am looking forward to the improved efficiencies and ability to channel newly unleashed brainpower towards innovation.

Q: What are you most passionate about in healthcare?
My personal mission is to reduce the burden of cancer on patients and their families. All of my previous roles and every project I work on in my role at Precision – from syndicated market research, resource development, advisory boards, panel discussions, market access consulting and beyond – stems from that mission.

Q: What do you like most about working at Precision AQ?
I love the collaborative atmosphere at Precision AQ and Precision Medicine Group as a whole.  If a client has a need that I may not be best suited to support, I can easily phone a friend across the company. The depth of our bench of in-house expertise is unparalleled. Not only does this provide value to our clients, but it also supports my continuous education and development.

Q: What should life science organizations prioritize in innovation?
With oncology treatment paradigms becoming increasingly complex and personalized, we are approaching a critical volume of information and a capacity deficit to manage that data. Life sciences companies should focus on ways to help the system work smarter, increase automation, and streamline processes to reduce obstacles to targeted treatment.

About Precision AQ’s Access Experience Team
